Programs:Book Discussion, Run, by Ann Patchett On June 24th, Eileen Epperson lead a spirited discussion of Ann Patchett's 2007 novel, Run. The book is the compelling story of a white widowed former Boston mayor and his natural son, and the two African American brothers he adopted as babies. A chance event propels the brothers' mother and sister into their lives, and brings changes to the entire family. Book Discussion devotees are eagerly awaiting the next one. Flower Garden Design, with Jane Brook Barba On Wednesday, April 14, 2010, an interesting and informative program on Flower Garden Design and how to choose plants for your garden was presented by Jane Brook Barba. Ms. Barba, a long-time garden designer and lecturer, gave a talk and slide presentation to illustrate basic garden design. Lots of hand-outs were available listing her favorite annuals and perennials and where some of the more obscure ones can be found. More programs on gardening are planned.
Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe On November 12, Sonya Green, Program Coordinator at the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center, and Craig Hotchkiss, Program Director at the Mark Twain House and Museum, presented a well-researched and interesting illustrated talk, ‘Stowe and Twain: Effecting Social Change.’ The presentation placed the authors in the context of 19th-century U.S. history and showed how their literary careers reflected the period. The impact of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Huckleberry Finn on U.S. race relations over the past 150 was also a focus of the talk.
